This was a lovely little fairy tale, a story of three lost fae's or fairies who are triplets, Sam, Cassandra and Allie. The three are separated from their spouses also triplets and werewolves. As the story begins they have no idea who they are or how they ended up in house they've never seen before. Each begins to have visions of their spouses and through these dreams and magic they are reunited in the end. The writing was engaging and the three faes' journey gripping, keeping you wanting them to get home. This is a great YA book with three sweet romantic sagas woven in. Highly recommend this read. Good job, Ms. Herrick!Product details

Echo Faries and wearwolves A D Herrick AD Herrick 9781520530291 Books Reviews
More like a novella, exposition, or a fable, than a novel, Echo could be written in three chapters as there are only two significant events... the magic itself and then the undoing of the magic. However, I'm glad the author took as long as she did to stretch out the story, drawing deep into its cuteness and the interplay between the characters.
My gosh, there are so many typos in this book. Please, please get a proofreader. Fortunately for the author, my ranking will not be affected by the numerous typos, numbering to several each page.
At first, when I read the book, and not even until more than halfway, I could not figure out the visual appearance of the three triplets, Cassandra, Allie, and Sam. I hovered between three possibilities; all were cats transformed from human form, all were in human form but had the minds of cats, or they all were anthropomorphic cats. After a while, I thought, for sure that it would be the anthropomorphic option, until later in the book when I finally figured it out... Allie is still in human form, but her siblings have been transformed into cats, although with the ability to think and speak like humans.
Triplets married to triplets... hmm, never heard of that. I'm certain it's not illegal, but it is quite unusual.
All in all, an unusual and whimsical fable a bit stretched out. If the original triplets are fairies, though, do they have wings and aren't they supposed to be tiny in size as humans? Lots of various forms of paranormal creatures co-existing!
Like a great soul singer this book has heart. There is a great warmth and affection for all the characters which shines throughout the book. Fairy tale like in its story it incorporates both fairies and sprites, as well as strong and handsome lycanthropes. It is both charming and endearing.
I found the beginning a little confusing as I was not sure if Allie, Sam and Casandra were human. It is not until the fourth chapter that it is made clear that Sam and Cassandra are cats. The idea that Allie wants to learn how to be a teenager is quite funny as she is already acting like one. However, if she is supposed to be a married woman such behaviour is inappropriate.
How the three of them arrived at the house in Detroit, who their parents were and what tribe they belonged to was explained towards the end, but not in any depth. I appreciate that the book is short, but it could be developed further with some more detail.
The emphasis on nature, smell, touch and energy is very strong and very well done throughout the book. It is one of the most distinguishing features and gives credibility to the idea of the Fae being in touch with nature.
There is a lack of conflict and a slow pace throughout. Even the clash with the imps is short and played down. Withholding information causes tension and anticipation, but conflict gives the characters a problem to solve, a lesson to learn and life to the action. It moves the story forward and forms a character arc. Allie may have learned that she is not useless, that she can do things right, but if these incidents are only small there needs to be more of them.
The biggest thing that lets this novel down are the mistakes. Some sentences don’t flow very well.
‘I got broken fish..’
Perhaps, ‘I’ve got broken fish..’ or ‘I’ve bought broken fish..’
‘Her finger pulling on the track pad of her laptop, bring up the next highlighted point.’
Missing word? ‘Her finger pulling on the track pad of her laptop, to bring up the next highlighted point.’ Or ‘bringing up..’
‘her finger daftly working..’
Shouldn’t that be ‘deftly working..’
The ending was satisfying and in line with the positive storytelling. There is some good imagery and the beginnings of characterisation in this story, which make me believe this author has potential. I would love to read something longer which allows her to go deeper into character and stretches her insight into human behaviour.
Echo is an unusual fantasy like tale which centers on characters who find themselves in a new place with new feelings and recollections. For me it was about longing, desire and reunion. Herrick does a good job of making you wonder whether the various characters are human or not. There's a strange mix of feline, wolf and sexuality. The novel isn't very long and for some could be a short and easy read. The reason I don't rate it more is because I think the writing in places could have been tighter and more polished. It wasn't really a page-turner but I can understand how it could be some.
Great read!!
The author has done a good job keeping up with the flow. Little over 100 pages, so a quick read without getting bored. The character creation is really good, made me to guess a lot in the beginning part of the book but it becomes much clear later. Thats interesting and engaging.
Overall a good read and job well done.
